Leadership Services

Leadership Coaching and Support

Protecting the Important from the Urgent

Leadership Coaching and Support

We are all in this together...

When a school leader needs assistance, where does it come from? How can districts offer their building leaders additional support? Where can school leaders get the help they need, on their schedule, in a safe and confidential environment?

Tom offers a variety of services to support school leaders to maintain and expand their capacity to be effective across all of the domains of leadership. Services range from one-time consults regarding a particular challenge to leadership coaching packages tailored to meet leaders’ needs and schedules.

"Tom has helped me improve my personal practice in many ways."

~ Bryan Kelliher, Principal

Leadership Coaching and Support

Differentiated support to help schools overcome their specific challenges and maximize their unique assets...

A school’s journey to create the conditions needed for student and staff success sometimes needs an infusion of external support over time. Tom works with school and/or district leadership to provide strategic support packages, ranging from school assessment and strategic planning to professional development on high-leverage strategies and ongoing leadership team support.

"Tom has surely become part of the Beech Team, and we look forward to continuing our work together in the future."

Being the leaders that we choose to be...

Do you ever feel like you do not have time to be the educational leader you want to be?

This workshop will be a collective exploration of strategies to manage and overcome the inherent daily tensions and challenges of leadership that impede us from being the leaders we want to be.  Together, we will reflect upon who we want to be as leaders, identify the challenges that impact our ability to lead and develop and share strategies that will help all protect time and energy for our most important work.

Goals:  The workshop is facilitated in four sections with clear learning goals for each:

Part I:  Foundations - I can clearly articulate the kind of leader that I want to be.

Part II: Challenges - I can identify the challenges I face as I try to “protect the important from the urgent."

Part III: Strategies - I can share and gather strategies for success in mitigating these challenges.

Part IV: Action - I can articulate how I could utilize specific leadership strategies in my own context to mitigate the challenges I face.

Time Investment:  The workshop is typically a minimum of two hours. With more time, we can delve deeper into the topics and differentiate for district priorities and needs.

Building a culture of collective stewardship...

While the benefits of distributive leadership are well known, transitioning from more traditional leadership models to a school leadership system that engages and empowers school staff can be challenging. This workshop provides structure and support to help make this shift a smooth and positive experience for all, protecting the school from many possible pitfalls that could derail such an essential change in a school’s evolution.
The workshop and follow-up support draw upon Tom’s three decades of experience participating in Leadership Teams as a teacher-leader and as a school administrator.

“I am so thankful for your feedback and all of the time you have spent getting our Leadership Team together. Thank you.”

Strategic Planning

Developing actionable plans that guide schools to meet their goals...

Schools evolve to become more effective by working with all stakeholders:

  • to develop a clear and forward-thinking vision;
  • by committing to make that vision a reality;
  • by analyzing data and experience to establish SMART goals within a strategic framework;
  • by setting the action steps required;
  • and through ongoing stewardship and support to follow through in making the vision a reality.

Strategic planning support is differentiated to meet schools where they are at in order to develop actionable plans to meet their goals.

"I like how this work has opened communication with our peers."

Vision Building Process

How do we want learning to look, four to eight years from now?

The Vision Building Process helps schools and school districts defend against institutional inertia to make the vision for our school or district explicit.

This process strives to involve a wide range of stakeholders to craft the future of learning in their home community. Specific methods are tailored to meet the needs and goals of each school or district.

“Tom clearly demonstrates the value in creating a collective vision where this magical alchemy of great performance occurs within school culture.”

~  Claudia Stephens, Dean of Students

Beyond The Numbers

Observing your school through an objective, personalized lens...

In our 21st-century educational landscape, educators have ready access to reams of data. Making decisions and strategic planning based upon hard data is critical, but numerical information is not always enough.

Is your school meeting its goals? Are strategic plans and priorities implemented? What’s happening behind the doors of classrooms? What high-leverage strategies would facilitate greater student achievement? Questions like these percolate in the space between schools’ goals and the day-to-day reality of students’ experiences.

TLCS’s Beyond the Numbers Service helps school and district leaders find new insight into their questions. School leaders identify what questions and data points they want to explore.  Observation frameworks are personalized to meet specific targets. Together, we develop a package that provides insight based on in-person observations.
